Week 2 Assignments

1 The Shape Gallery

The town is opening a tiny art gallery and Turtle has been asked to fill the front window with a row of shapes. A triangle, a square, a hexagon and a star — lined up like paintings, each i a colour that pops.
Hint: the turning angle for a shape with n equal sides is `360 / n`.

Your mission: draw a triangle, a square, a hexagon and a star in a row, each a different colour.

2 Brisbane 2032

The 2032 Summer Olympics are coming to Brisbane, and the Lord Mayor needs a symbol for the posters. Five interlocking rings, in blue, black, red, yellow and green — the most famous drawing in the world. Turtle is nervous, but you are ready.

Your mission: draw the five Olympic rings using circle(), setting the line width with pensize(), in the correct colours and layout.

Hint: lift the pen (penup()) to move between ring positions, then put it down (pendown()) to draw.

3 Turtle Gets a New Job

NASA has a strange request. They want enormous outline numbers drawn on the ground — so big that astronauts on the International Space Station can read them from orbit. Ordinary solid digits will not do; these must be outline-font numbers, hollow in the middle.

Your mission: Write a Turtle program that draws outline-font numbers 0–9. Add a header comment (your name, the date, what the program does).

Week 1 Assignments

1 Hello everyone!

You have just taught the computer to say `Hello, world` — but the world is enormous, and right now your friends are feeling a little left out. Emma is waiting. So is Noah. So is your best mate from footy. They would all love a greeting of their very own.

Your mission: rewrite your first program so it greets several of your best friends by name, one cheerful line each.

Hint: one `print()` per friend is perfectly fine for now — we will learn a shortcut later.

2 Draw a House

Turtle has just moved to a new suburb and needs somewhere to live. It cannot afford a builder, so it is going to draw its own home. A house is really just friendly shapes stacked together: square walls, a triangle roof, and maybe a door to knock on.

Your mission: use Turtle to draw a house — square walls and a triangle roof, each in its own colour. Add a door or a window if you are feeling fancy.

Hint: four sides of 100, turning 90° each time, makes a tidy square.

3 Draw You Initials

Every great artist signs their work. Before you leave today, Turtle wants to stamp your mark on the canvas — the first letters of your name, drawn big, bold and colourful.

Your mission: draw your initials with Turtle, large and in bright colours. Straight letters like `L`, `T` and `E` are easiest; curved letters are a fun challenge.

Hint: sketch the letter on grid paper first, then turn each line into a `forward`/`turn`.
